Different kind of diving countries

14.7.2010

Everyone knows, there are "diving countries" and "not so diving countries", there are countries, that are no "diving countries" at all. It is very difficult to get from third to second, and it's almost impossible, or will take a decades to get to first category, at the same time it is very easy to change your first to the second category. Can one championships show this tendence? Surely not, but it can definitely be a take off for some countries and appear a failure for others.

For sure it is possible to say that this Championships was good for Great Britan. They had 10 finalist plus seven medals all together. It was three gold medals in Boys events and one in Girls. All the divers showed a very high level of technical performance, and a lot of specialists marked their beautiful high take-offs. Vesa Martikkala, the Chief of Finnish diving section mentioned, that scince Olympic Games 1996 in Atlanta divers from Great Britain didn't medal on these competitions, so they had a crisis meeting to decide what to do with this problem. After that a big programm began to develope this sport: "They made a talent search in schools and invested a lot of money". "London will host next Olympic Games, so they need to have best athlets, - affirmed judge of the Championships Ronald van der Voort. - That's why they invested money into the whole system of the olympic sport. And now we see the result". One of the triumphators of this event is British diver Jack Laugher, who one two gold medals on B boys 1 and 3 meters.

Russia ruled the championships. Russian divers earned all together 14 medals: 6 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze. Great Britain got 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze and Ukraine got more medals (12), but 3 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze.

"In overall it was a pretty good Championships, - said Ronald van der Voort. - The level of competitions mostly was higher than the previous year, besides B gils, who were a little weak. Also we were very pleased to see more teams in syncro competition".

As for most successful divers of this Championships it is possible to mention two names: Evgeniya Selezneva from Russia, who won every competition she took part in (B girls 1 meter, B girls 3 meters and 3 meters syncro) and ukrainian diver Olexandar Bondar, who won the biggest amount of medals, including two gold: 3 meters syncro and A boys platform - gold, A boys 1 meter and A boys 3 meters silver.

But the true sensation of the Junior Championships 2010 became Igor Myalin, 13 year-old diver from Penza, Russia. Not higher than 130cm he impressed judges with his technical level of performance. "Of cause Igor was a discovery of this Championships, - said Ronald van der Voort. - It was incredible how he, being so small, uses the board!" Very conservative during the competition, but very smiley outside the pool Myalin said, that he reached all his goals on this competition. "The most important event for me will be platform, - he said after he got bronze on B boys 1 meter final. - I want to win there". And so said so done. He got the first perfect 10.0 of the Championships, (the audience witnessed only three 10.0 during the whole event) and was the only Russian male diver to win the competition.

And last, but not least this Championships became a big success for one more country - Finland. First, four out of five Finnish divers reached the final in their events. Second - Heikki Mäkikallio from Oulu won the bronze medal on the B boys platform, the happening, that Finland waited for 10 years. And third - high level of the orginizing. Above all else the highly effective new Wireless Touch Pad for Jugdes system, which was invented by Arto Huusko and Jari Komulainen, was used here for the first time in the intenational championships level.
