Swimming competition started with two records

The first of five days of swimming European Junior Championships started off on Wednesday at Mäkelänrinne Swimming Centre. Two Championship Records saw daylight on Day one.
The EJC started in Helsinki with 40 nations with 524 swimmers participating. Great Britain came to Finland with the biggest team of the competition, 41 swimmers. Smallest teams comes from Cyprus and Faroe Islands, both with one swimmer. Finland has named 29 swimmers. Ukrainian Andriy Govorov was the champion on 50 meter butterfly. Already in the semi-finals he clocked a new CR with a time of 23,57 bettering six hundredths for his own mark from last summer at Prague. Govorov aimed for another record in the final at the same eve but time was 0,01 slower than in the semis. Still he was in his own class, silver medalist was Dmitry Pokotylo from Russia (24,50) and bronze medalist Frenchman Mehdy Metella (24,62). Yannick Agnel was the fastest man on the 400 meter freestyle. Agnel did the winning time of 3:46,26 breaking his own CR by nearly two seconds. Sergiy Frolov (UKR) took silver 9,44 seconds behind Agnel and British Alfie Howes gained bronze rightbehind Frolov. The best performer of the Finnish team on the first day was Valtteri Halonen. He placed fourth in 50 meter butterfly with his new personal best time 25,02. Jenna Laukkanen and Veera Kivirinta also reached the final in 50 meter breaststroke. Laukkanen finished fifth (32,51) and Kivirinta seventh (32,66).
